Best practice for peripheral blood progenitor cell mobilization and collection in adults and children: results of a Società Italiana Di Emaferesi e Manipolazione Cellulare (SIDEM) and Gruppo Italiano Trapianto Midollo Osseo (GITMO) consensus process

Abstract: The efforts of the expert panel members allowed to set up and share a common approach to the mobilization, enumeration, and collection issues in the field of both autologous and allogeneic peripheral blood SCT.

“…Two Italian scientific societies for hematology and hemapheresis (SIDEM and GITMO) produced best practice recommendations for stem cell mobilization in children and adults. 299 Extracorporeal photopheresis is a treatment in which blood mononuclear cells collected by apheresis are incubated with methoxsalen and exposed to UV light, and subsequently reinfused to the patient. Extracorporeal photopheresis is by UK and Italian scientific/clinical consensus groups recommended as 2 nd -line treatment for graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) after allogeneic stem cell transplantation and for scleroderma and other autoimmune diseases.…”

“…Biosimilars are similar but nonidentical versions of existing biological drugs for which patents have expired [17]. Despite the rigorous approval process for biosimilars, concerns have been expressed about the efficacy and safety of these products in clinical practice [18].…”

“…1-3 PB-HPSC collection involves administering subcutaneous injections of G-CSF to the donor for 4 to 5 days followed by apheresis from Day 5 onward. 4 Lenograstim (LENO) is a glycosylated form of G-CSF, while filgrastim is nonglycosylated. The glycosylation of G-CSF confers advantages in terms of in vitro stability to temperature, pH, and degradation by proteases and attributes a greater biological potency with regard to both the qualitative and the quantitative colony formation of ABBREVIATIONS: HD(s) 5 healthy donor(s); HPSC(s) 5 hematopoietic progenitor stem cell(s); LENO 5 lenograstim;…”
