These rocks oc cur at pres ent at depths be tween 30 and 600 m. Fluid in clu sion and iso to pic anal y ses have been per formed in the car bon ate min er als from si der it ic sand stones, clayey siderites and si der it ic coquinas. Sid er ite is the main car bon ate min eral of the si der it ic rocks. Cal cite and an ker ite are also pres ent. The sid er ite is rep re sented by two va ri et ies, Mg-rich sid er ite (sideroplesite, less com monly -pistomesite) and sid er ite. Two gen er a tions of sid er ite have been dis tin guished -an early and a late one. The early sid er ite was formed at tem per a tures of about 20°C in the zone of mi cro bi o log i cal methanogenesis from ma rine wa ters with some in flu ence of me te oric wa ters (d 18 O from -7.84 to -1.92‰ VSMOW). The late sid er ite crys tallized at tem per a tures of about 62-110°C from pore wa ters en riched in 18 O (d 18 O >0‰ VSMOW) as com pared with the iso topic com po si tion of the wa ters re spon si ble for the early sid er ite gen er a tion. The con ducted fluid in clu sion anal y ses point to for ma tion of the ce ments from com plex flu ids of brine and car bon di ox ide char ac ter, with den si ties slightly ex ceed ing 1 g/cm 3 and sa lini ties vary ing from 10.5 to 16.9 wt.% NaCl eq. and from 6.4 to 14.0 wt.% NaCl eq. in the Holy Cross Mts. and in the Czêstochowa re gion, re spec tively. The ho mog e ni za tion tem per a tures lie in the in ter vals of 62-110°C and 60-97°C, re spectively and rep re sent el e vated val ues com pared with data from the Pol ish Low lands. Major phosphogenic events took place in the late Paleoproterozoic and the Ediacaran, both of which followed an episode of atmospheric oxygenation. These apparent coincidences have led to suggestions that the Precambrian phosphorus cycle was partly regulated by oceanic redox conditions, although direct evidence is lacking. In this paper, glaucony has generally higher total iron (TFe 2 O 3 ) than sandstone-hosted glaucony, consistent with Al 3+ -Fe 3+ substitution in the octahedral site, as supported by Raman peaks slightly shifted towards lower wavenumbers for higher Fe content. A decrease in detrital input probably resulted in limited Al availability during early diagenesis, which in turn led to the waning of glaucony upsection. The phosphate grains do not show any negative Ce anomalies, consistent with precipitation of authigenic apatite in suboxic environments with insignificant preferential remobilisation of Ce during deposition and early diagenesis. REE + Y features show variable diagenetic REE enrichment in phosphorites, but identical concave-down patterns. The wide occurrence of glaucony cement further documents the presence of a generally suboxic early diagenetic environment on the seafloor, which was in active exchange with bottom seawater. Slight fluctuations of redox states in the porewater and bottom water would have promoted the cycling of Fe, enrichment of phosphate and REE, and extensive glaucony authigenesis. Therefore, the glaucony-bearing phosphorites in the Doushantuo Formation are a direct result of Fe-redox driven diagenesis.Apatite-glaucony association likely forms in suboxic environments and is considered as a useful mineralogical proxy for paleoredox conditions on the Precambrian ocean floors.

Early Jurassic climate is characterized by alternating cold and warm periods highlighted by studies based notably on oxygen isotopes measured on belemnite guards and other marine invertebrate shells. These climatic changes include changes in the hydrological cycle, and consequently weathering and runoff conditions. In order to clarify the erosion and weathering conditions during the Pliensbachian, this study determined the mineralogical composition of the clay fraction of 132 samples taken from the entire stage drilled in the Llanbedr (Mochras Farm) borehole (Cardigan Bay Basin). The clay mineral assemblages are composed of various proportions of chlorite, illite, illite/smectite mixed-layers (R1 I-S), smectite and kaolinite, with possibly occasional traces of berthierine. The occurrence of abundant smectite indicates that the maximum burial temperature never exceeded 70°C. Consequently, clay minerals are considered mainly detrital, and their fluctuations likely reflect environmental changes. The variations in the proportions of smectite and kaolinite are opposite to each other. Kaolinite is particularly abundant at the base of the jamesoni Zone, in part coinciding with the d 13 C negative excursion corresponding to the Sinemurian/Pliensbachian Boundary Event, and through the davoei Zone, whilst smectite is abundant in the upper part of jamesoni and base of ibex zones and through the subnodosus/ gibbosus subzones of the margaritatus Zone. The kaolinite-rich intervals reflect an intensification of hydrolysis and an acceleration of the hydrological cycle, while the smectite-rich intervals indicate a more arid climate. The spinatum Zone is characterized by a distinct clay assemblage with abundant primary minerals, R1 I-S, kaolinite reworked from previously deposited sediments or from Palaeozoic rocks, and probably berthierine originating from contemporaneous ironstone-generating environments of shallower waters. This mineralogical change by the end of the Pliensbachian likely reflects a transition from a dominant chemical weathering to a deeper physical erosion of the continent, probably related to a significant sea-level fall consistent with a glacio-eustatic origin.
