Berberine Prevents Cognitive Disorders Induced by Sepsis by Regulating the Inflammatory Cytokines, Oxidative Stress and Neuronal Apoptosis in Rat Brain

Abstract: Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection and can cause a huge burden to whole families and to society in terms of medical costs. Cognitive disorders induced by sepsis are still exasperating problems in clinical research. This paper examines a new measure of berberine (BBR) in sepsis induced cognitive disorders based on CLP surgery. BBR is one of many extracts from Chinese traditional herbs and exhibits antidiabetic, anticancer and antioxidant activities… Show more

“…It has been reported that some fractions of JQ exhibited anti-oxidative activity, it seems possible that JQ could ameliorate oxidative stress in STZ-induced diabetic rats. 22,23 To assess this, we evaluated the biomarkers of oxidative stress such as the levels of SOD, MDA, CAT and GSH-Px in renal tissue after six weeks treatment of JQ. As shown in Fig.…”

“…Existing drugs such as metformin (Tang et al , ) and minocycline (Adembri et al , ) show brain protective effects in experimental sepsis. The natural antioxidant berberine improved survival in a rat CLP model but also motor and cognitive functions (Shi et al , ).…”

“…Sepsis, bir enfeksiyona karşı konağın uygun olmayan yanıtının neden olduğu hayatı tehdit eden çoklu organ fonksiyon bozukluğu olarak tanımlanan, insidansı ve mortalitesi yüksek bir sağlık sorunudur (1). Ülkemizde sepsis oranları hakkında yeterli veri bulunmamakla birlikte, sepsis her yıl tüm dünyada altı milyondan fazla insanın ölümüne neden olmaktadır.…”
