Berberine alleviates palmitic acid‑induced podocyte apoptosis by reducing reactive oxygen species‑mediated endoplasmic reticulum stress

Abstract: lipid accumulation in podocytes can lead to the destruction of cellular morphology, in addition to cell dysfunction and apoptosis, which is a key factor in the progression of chronic kidney disease (cKd). Berberine (BBr) is an isoquinoline alkaloid extracted from medicinal plants such as Coptis chinensis, which has been reported to have a lipid-lowering effect and prevent cKd progression. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effect of BBr on palmitic acid (PA)-induced podocyte apoptosis and it… Show more

“…One of the possible mechanisms of progressive renal injury is podocyte loss, which contributes to the progression of glomerular diseases (Xiong, Meng, & Zhang, 2020). The protective effects of BBR on the palmitic acid (PA)‐induced apoptosis in an in vitro model of podocyte damage have been investigated (Xiang et al, 2021). Intracellular ROS generation and apoptosis were decreased in cells following treatment with BBR (Xiang et al, 2021).…”

Intracellular ROS generation and apoptosis were decreased in cells following treatment with BBR (Xiang et al, 2021). Based on the results of this study, BBR reduced the expression of ER stress proteins, including GRP78, PERK, ATF6, ATF4, CHOP, and IRE1 (Xiang et al, 2021).…”
