“…With the exception of the chinchilla (in which these cells were rare), they have not been found in the nonpregnant uteri of other mammals. Similar-appearing granulocytes do occur, however, in the pregnant uteri of many species (Baker, 1948;Hamper1 and Hellweg, 1958;Hellweg, 1959;Peel, 1977, 1978;Croy and Kassouf, 1989). In primates these cells frequently have been referred to as endometrial stroma1 granulocytes, although in the case of macaques some have also been observed in the superficial myometrium (Cardell et al, 1969).…”

“…In his work, Hamperl mentions that similar cells—argentaffin (take up silver stain) macrophages named “Körnchenzellen”—were described in the inaugural dissertation of W. Dyx in 1941, but the work could not be accessed. In subsequent years, it was discovered that acidophil granulated cells located in the human endometrium and decidua had been observed many years ago by Marchand in 1904 [ 15 ] and Weill in 1921 [ 16 ], as mentioned by Hellweg in 1959 [ 17 ]. Hamperl initially preferred the name “F cells” or fluorocytes, due to the typical fluorescence of these granules in the frozen or paraffin tissue sections when exposed to UV light.…”

“…The chromatin frequently appears as coarse clumps distributed about the periphery of the nucleus. Previous work has indicated that EGC are numerous in the non-pregnant uteri only of animals that men¬ struate (Hellweg, 1959;Dallenbach-Hellweg, Dawson & Hisaw, 1966; J. J. Rasweiler IV Cardell, Hisaw & Dawson, 1969).…”
