The development of the vascular bed in the rabbit ear was investigated using vascular corrosion casts from animals of various ages. Examination of the casts revealed that the arrangement of the major auricular arteries and veins was determined before birth and was maintained during postnatal growth of the ear. Furthermore, the number of arteries branching off the central ear artery and the lateral arteries did not increase with increasing ear length. Scanning electron microscopic examination of lateral segments of adult ear casts revealed many anastomoses between marginal arteries and veins. These arteriovenous anastomoses (AVAs) occurred singly, in pairs, or in clusters of three to six. Their size and shape were variable, even in the same cast. The central segment of many AVA casts showed surface impressions of endothelial cell nuclei which were different from the impressions on adjacent arteries and veins. Arteriovenous anastomoses were also detected in ear casts from animals as young as 8 days. The density of AVAs in lateral ear segments ranged from 95-165 cm-2 in 8- to 11-day-old rabbits to 80-115 cm-2 in adults. However, estimates of the total number of AVAs in the lateral ear margin indicated that AVAs continued to be formed at a steady rate during growth of the ear. During the early neonatal period the cutaneous capillary plexuses developed prominent tufts projecting toward the skin surface, which were apparently associated with developing hair follicles. These capillary tufts were not seen in casts from fetal or adult rabbits.

The effect of lymph stasis on limb blood flow was studied in 38 dogs where lymph-oedema of one of the hindlimbs was induced by ligation of the lymphatics on the thigh and of the regional lymph-node. Haemodynamic examinations were conducted in 17 animals; total blood flow and the nutritive flow to the muscles and skin (⁸⁶Rb extraction) were determined in both hindlimbs. Microcirculation was studied in 16 dogs by means of the india ink-gelatin injection method, the benzidine reaction and by the polyvinylchloride injection technique. In all cases specimens were taken from muscle, skin and subcutaneous connective tissue of both hindlimbs for light microscopic analysis. The results presented indicate an increase in total blood flow without any change in the nutritive flow to the skin or muscle in the lymph-oedematous limb. Lymph stasis induced intimal swelling and plasma infiltration of the intima and media of small vessels (pre-capillaries and metarterioles) of skin, muscles and subcutaneous tissue, which led to a blocked transportation of proteins. Small vessels of the limb with lymph-oedema were spottily dilated, whereas at other areas compressed capillaries could be seen. Evidence is supplied for the appearance of arteriovenous shunt circulation in lymph-oedema of the lower limb. In a previous study we observed that, unlike venous congestion, lymph-oedema of the limbs in man was accompanied by increased blood flow and a conspicuously low arteriovenous oxygen difference in the limb. (1) This finding led us to assume that chronic lymph stasis may induce arteriovenous shunt circulation. The present experiments were designed to study relative changes of total and nutritive limb blood flow and to examine alterations of the microcirculation in experimental lymph-oedema of the limb.

Arteriovenous shunting in visceral organs was studied by simultaneous injection of 15 ± 5 and 50 ± 10 (SD) µm microspheres labelled with different isotopes into the left atrium of unanesthetized, unsedated dogs, pentobarbital anesthetized dogs, unanesthetized and unsedated dogs as well as anesthetized dogs subjected to a 1-week’s biliary stasis, and anesthetized dogs subjected to a 6-weeks’ biliary stasis. All dogs showed moderate shunting of the smaller spheres in the stomach. Dogs subjected to a 1-week’s biliary stasis demonstrated signs of shunting also in the jejunum-ileum. All anesthetized dogs, both with and without biliary obstruction, showed signs of substantial shunting outside the visceral area. In dogs subjected to a 1-week’s biliary stasis the liver blood flow was increased owing to increased flow through the hepatic artery.
