“…Although the existence of such papillae, or their vestiges, at corresponding regions of tongues of some toothed whales has been briefly described or illustrated (Mayer, 1843; Owen, 1868; Burmeister, 1869; Sonntag, 1922; Ping, 1927; Arvy and Pilleri, 1972; Chen and Chen, 1975; Slijper, 19791, the possible relationship of the presence of these papillae to the age of the animal has not been examined. Homologous papillae have also been observed in the tongues of perinatal stages in several kinds of land mammals (De Beaux, 1924; Habermehl, 1952; Adamesteanu et al, 1966;Evans and Christensen, 1979). In humans there have been a number of morphological studies on lingual papillae (i.e., on filiform, fungiform, foliate, and vallate papillae), but no descriptions of marginal papillae have been reported.…”
