Benzyl Dihydrazone versus Thiosemicarbazone Schiff Base: Effects on the Supramolecular Arrangement of Cobalt Thiocyanate Complexes and the Generation of CoN6 and CoN4S2 Coordination Spheres

Abstract: In this study, we examine the coordination chemistry of benzyl dihydrazone and thiosemicarbazone Schiff bases featuring different chelation modes, steric bulk, and reactivities towards cobalt(II) thiocyanate. The tetradentate benzyl dihydrazone ligands coordinate to the Co(SCN) 2 fragment to form CoN 6 coordination spheres (1-3), whereas the thiosemicarbazone ligands provide Co III complexes featuring CoN 4 S 2 coordination spheres (4 and 5) and charge-balancing anions {SCNand [Co(SCN) 4 ] 2for 4 and 5, respec… Show more

“…It is worthy to note, that 1 is isostructural to its Mn II and Co II analogues. 22,31 Complex 1 has a neutral discrete heteroleptic mononuclear structure, where the Zn II metal center is coordinated by one ligand L I via its two pyridyl-imine chelate functions as well as two N-bound NCS À anions giving rise to the ZnN 6 chromophore with a distorted trigonal-prismatic coordination environment around the cation (Fig. 1, Table S1 in the ESI †), which has been proven by the SHAPE 2.1 soware.…”

“…In our previous papers, we have noted that this behaviour is characteristic of crystal structures, which comprise more than one molecular component, e.g. in structures featured by two crystallographically independent molecules 40 or in solvates. 41 Indeed, this is the case for compound 4, in which a methanol molecule is present.…”

“…On the other hand, intermolecular interactions organize the molecular architectures, which play a critical role in synthesis, catalysis, micellization, etc. (Akbari Afkhami et al, 2017;Gurbanov et al, 2017Gurbanov et al, , 2018Kopylovich et al, 2011a,b;Ma et al, 2017a,b;Mahmoudi et al, 2016Mahmoudi et al, , 2017aMahmoudi et al, ,b,c, 2018a. New types of non-covalent bonds such as halogen, chalcogen, pnictogen and tetrel bonds or their cooperation with hydrogen bonds are able to contribute to the synthesis and catalysis, giving materials with improved properties (Mahmudov et al, 2013(Mahmudov et al, , 2014b(Mahmudov et al, , 2015(Mahmudov et al, , 2017a(Mahmudov et al, ,b, 2019Mizar et al, 2012;Shixaliyev et al, 2013Shixaliyev et al, , 2014.…”
