Benzo(a)pyrene induces hepatic AKR1A1 mRNA expression in tilapia fish (Oreochromis niloticus)

Abstract: AKR1A1 or aldehyde reductase is a member of the aldo-keto reductases superfamily that is evolutionarily conserved among species. AKR1A1 is one of the five AKRs (AKR1A1 and 1C1-1C4) implicated in the metabolic benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) activation to reactive BaP 7,8-dione. BaP is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) widely distributed in aquatic ecosystems and its metabolic activation is necessary to produce its toxic effects. Although the presence of AKR1A1 in fish has been reported, its tissue distribution in t… Show more

“…Aldehyde reductase (ALR) has been widely characterized in organisms and has been implicated in cellular redox balance (Penning, 2017). ALRs are evolutionarily conserved among species and display similar gene structures and functions (Osorio‐Yáñez et al ., 2012). ALR catalyses the reduction of endogenous and exogenous aldehydes in an NADPH‐dependent manner (Fujii et al ., 2021).…”

“…To date, there are few reports on teleost ALRs. In zebrafish, ALR is vital for maintaining glucose balance (Li et al ., 2020), whereas ALR is involved in the detoxification of benzo (a) pyrene in tilapia (Hassanin et al ., 2017; Osorio‐Yáñez et al ., 2012). Administration of recombinant ALR alleviated oxidative damage and reduced immunotoxicity in yellow catfish under cadmium stress (Yang et al ., 2022).…”
