Benzene in the Environment

Indoor air pollution belongs to the factors which puts the health of the corresponding occupants at risk. Effects of ventilation and, hence, various air flow regimes as parameters contributing to reduced air pollution in indoor spaces were further studied. For this purpose, air flow and distribution of the pollutant concentration were three-dimensionally modeled at various ventilation rates. Results indicate that an increase in input air flow rate into the room in early times directly contributes to enhanced concentration of the pollutant in the indoor space. In general, with increasing the ventilation rate and changing the fluid-flow regime from laminar to turbulent, the average concentration of the pollutant inside the indoor space decreased significantly.

Cytochrome P450 4F3 (CYP4F3) catalyzes the inactivation of leukotriene B4 by ω-oxidation in human neutrophils. Here, we examined the mRNA and protein expression of the CYP4F3 in HL-60 cells, an acute promyelocytic leukemia cell line, in the presence of hydroquinone(HQ). We found hydroquinone led to a decrease in cell proliferation and a increase in cell apoptosis in a dose-dependent and time-dependent manner, it also most strongly induced the expression of the CYP4F3. CYP4F3 appears to be responsible for the cell proliferation and cell apoptosis, which may be play a role in the toxicity of hydroquinone.

Benzene is ah ighly toxic aromatic hydrocarbon. Inhalingb enzene can cause dizziness,v ertigo, headaches, aplasia,m utations and, in the moste xtreme cases, cancer. Trans,trans-muconic acid (t,t-MA) is one of the metabolization products of benzene. Although different analytical methods have been reported for the determination of t,t-MA, these are often expensive, requiret rainedp ersonnel, are not suitable foro n-site measurements, and use hazardous organics olvents. For theser easons, the development of reliable, selective and sensitivem ethodsf or rapid and in situ detection of t,t-MA are of importance. Addressing this challenge, an anodevice for the selectivea nd sensitive quantification of t,t-MA in urine is reported. The nanodevice used is achieved using mesoporous silica nanoparticles loaded with ad ye reporter and capped with ad icopper(II) azacryptand. Pore openinga nd payload release is induced rapidly (10min) and selectively with t,t-MA in urine, using as imple fluorimeter without sample pretreatment.
