“…Comparing the species found in the present study area (18°-23°S) with their incidence in other geographical regions studied by others authors along the Brazilian continental slope (Merlano & Hegedus, 1994;Sumida & Pires-Vanin, 1997;Miyaji, 2001;Scarabino, 2004) revealed some shared species. Nineteen species were shared between the present study and works done on the northeast region (11.37%), from a total of 167 species found.…”

“…In this study, we found high species turnover at station 16 (300 m depth), where some deep-sea species, such as Alvania xantias (Watson, 1885), Brookula spinulata (Absalão, Miyaji & Pimenta, 2001), and Solariella lubrica (Dall, 1881) showed a high dominance. Miyaji (2001) found a rough change, with 8% of sampled species occurring exclusively at depths greater than 400 m, whereas Sumida & Pires-Vanin (1997) found a different community from shallow areas occurring between 320 m and 500 m depth. Analyzing the vertical distribution of species found in this study (Table 2), we observed the occurrence of shallow-water and eurybathic species (shallowbathyal, distributions) at the slope stations.…”

“…This region harbors a mixture of faunas originating from tropical, subtropical and subantarctic regions (Sumida & Pires-Vanin 1997). This was evident in the present study by the occurrence of Leurocyclus tuberculosus and Portunus spinicarpus, which occur more abundantly between Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil and Patagonia in Argentina (Pires 1992 andMelo 1996).…”

“…Sumida & Pires-Vanin (1997) reported that the changes in the benthic fauna of Ubatuba clearly follow the depth gradients, and are probably linked to the changes in the sediment and the physical stability of the water masses present in the region. Pires (1992) noted that between 10 and 40 meters depth, the predominant factor in the distribution of the fauna off Ubatuba is the type of sediment, which varies from silty to sandy; above 40 m, temperature is the principal factor responsible for structuring the communities.…”

“…Antalis circumcincta (Watson, 1879) Distribution: Puerto Rico (Raffucci 2007) Bermuda (Abbott 1974); Antilles -St. Thomas -; Brazil -Pernambuco, Bahia, Espírito Santo and São Paulo- , Sumida & Pires-Vanin 1997. Exemplars with soft parts collected between 700 and 1000 m depths (Campos Basin, this study, MNRJ 16498-16500), empty shells between 247 and 1962 m depths (Steiner & Kabat 2004.…”
