Bennettitalean Leaves From the Permian of Equatorial Pangea—The Early Radiation of an Iconic Mesozoic Gymnosperm Group

Abstract: Bennettitaleans are an extinct group of gymnosperms that are among the most iconic plants of Earth’s vegetation during the Mesozoic Era. The sudden appearance and rise to dominance of the Bennettitales during the Triassic remains a mystery. Leaf fossils similar to typical bennettitalean foliage occur in late Paleozoic deposits worldwide, but bennettitalean foliage can be identified with certainty only in case the fossils are sufficiently well-preserved to show epidermal features. So far, the characteristic sto… Show more

“…From the upper Permian of Jordan, two distinct leaf type species, Nilssoniopteris jogiana and Pterophyllum pottii (Pl. 12.5-6), were recently formally described (Blomenkemper et al, 2021). Both show syndetocheilic stomata that are diagnostic for the group.…”

“…Some groups have already been studied in detail and results have been published, e.g. Dicroidium (Abu Hamad et al, 2008Blomenkemper et al, 2020), the Bennettitales (Blomenkemper et al, 2021), or the enigmatic Saportaea are currently in press (Kerp et al, in press). Others, however, are still under investigation, e.g.…”

“…The Bennettitales are a large group of extinct plants well known from the fossil record. Representatives range from the late Permian (Blomenkemper et al, 2021) to the Oligocene? (McLoughlin & Pott, 2011) and are widely distributed in both Northern and Southern Hemispheres (Taylor & Taylor, 1993).…”
