Benign Solid and Acinar Mesothelioma (Adenomatoid Tumor)

Abstract: Benign solid and acinar mesothelioma (BSAM)/adenomatoid tumor of the testis most frequently occurs in adulthood, being derived from the testicular tunics or adnexal structures. The tissue of origin for this tumor has been debated, although recent evidence, based upon ultrastructural and immunohistochemical findings, is indicative of its being a benign form of mesothelioma. BSAM has a variety of morphologic patterns, ranging from cords and sheets of cells (solid type) to acinar and cystic structures (acinar typ… Show more

“…30 Rarely, an intratesticular adenomatoid tumor may occur, 31,32 as was nicely illustrated by Delahunt and Kenwright (see their Fig. 3), 32 and this may complicate this differential. Further, the cords of adenomatoid tumor, when of solid type, may mimic those of SSCT; however, SSCT usually contains entrapped seminiferous tubules, unlike intratesticular adenomatoid tumor.…”

The trabecular growth pattern of SSCT may be similar to that seen in carcinoid tumors, but the lack of "salt and pepper" nuclei with granular cytoplasm, and absence of acinar arrangements, should point to SSCT rather than carcinoid tumor.…”
