Benign Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Larynx: A Case Report

Abstract: Minor salivary gland tumors of the larynx are relatively rare. Morphologically the majority of them are adenoid cystic carcinomas and the overwhelming location is the subglottic larynx. Benign pleomorphic adenomas are rare minor salivary gland tumors of the larynx which usually occur at the glottic and subglottic levels. We present only the sixth case of a supraglottic benign pleomorphic adenoma that we could find in the literature. A preoperative laryngogram localized the tumor to the supraglottic larynx and … Show more

“…It occurs most commonly in the parotid gland, with a frequency 10 times greater than that in any of the other major salivary glands, but may also occur in the upper aerodigestive tract or skin [1,2,4,6]. The commonest site of origin of PA in the upper respiratory tract is the nasal cavity, mainly in the septum, and PA originating in the nasopharynx is extremely rare.…”

“…A variety of approaches have been described in literature. Pharyngotomy 3,4 has been advocated especially for supraglottic lesions. Laryngofissure 5 has been used in patients with glottic or subglottic disease.…”

“…As pleomorphic adenoma is a benign tumour, most authors would agree that local excision with a tumour-free margin is adequate, with the advantage of preserving laryngeal function. Cotelingam et al (1977) and Som et al (1979) reported one case each of supraglottic pleomorphic adenoma treated successfully by lateral pharyngotomy and supraglottic laryngectomy with conservation of laryngeal function.…”
