Benign lipoblastomatosis ultrastructure and histogenesis

Abstract: Ultrastructural study of a case of benign lipoblastomatosis revealed a cellular spectrum which included undifferentiated mesenchymal cells, stellate myxoid cells, fibroblasts, lipoblasts, lipocytes and many intermediate forms. The uni- and multivacuolated fat cells contained membrane and non-membrane bound cytoplasmic vacuoles, predominatly of saturated lipid. Their cytoplasm also contained simple-structured mitochondria devoid of intramatrical or crystalloid bodies. The fine structure of the cellular componen… Show more

“…Criteria of benign lipoblastoma/lipoblastomatosis in conventional histology are a distinct lobulation [1] and varying stages of adipocytic maturation without nuclear atypia [6,14]. In contrast, myxoid liposarcoma is characterized by a lack of lobulation, more variable growth patterns, atypical tumor nuclei, and a plexiform vascular pattern.…”

“…Various other sites which have been described are neck, trunk, retroperitoneum, mediastinum and some rare areas like parapharyngeal space and lungs. 3,5,7,8 In the unusual case of lipoblastoma in an adult, the tumour was located in the subcutis of the dorsum of the neck. 6 Grossly the tumour is usually encapsulated and lobulated with most of them measuring less than 5 cm.…”

“…Greco et al opine that lipoblastomatosis in all likelihood represents proliferation of mesenchymal cells which show various degrees of maturation towards white adipose tissue. 8 The behavior is benign; local recurrence can occur, especially in the diffuse variant and following an incomplete excision. [3][4][5] In some cases, further maturation into adult type of adipose tissue was noted in the recurrent tumour.…”

“…However, this is a soft tissue tumor of brown fat and has a characteristic gray-brown, lobulated structure. The fat cells have more intracytoplasmic vacuoles as compared with lipoblastoma, and the appearance is granular [12]. Recent studies have described specific chromosomal abnormalities that characterize benign and malignant adipose tissue tumors.…”
