Benign Human Papillomavirus Infection in Renal Transplant Recipients

Abstract: Warts and cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas are common complications of immunosuppression. We studied a total of 189 renal transplant recipients clinically for such lesions. The incidence of warts increased steadily after transplant, such that of patients transplanted for more than 5 years, 92% were found to have warts and 65% had more than five warts each. DNA extracted from scrapings of their warts showed they carried the same human papillomavirus types as the general population, and not the unique set foun… Show more

“…However, multiple lesions are characteristic of immunosuppressed patients. Two thirds of these patients have more than 5 warts [3]and hundreds of viral warts in one individual are not uncommon. A large array of human papillomaviruses (HPVs) can be detected, comprising the common HPV types 1, 2, 4, the malignancy-associated HPV types 16, 18, 31–34, as well as the types associated with epidermodysplasia verruciformis HPV-5 and HPV-8 [1, 2, 3].…”

“…Such findings distinguish these lesions from those of Bowen's disease, in which maturation is disorderly and appears as dysplasia. The basement membrane is intact [9]. However, nuclear alterations can also appear, along with dyskeratosis, atypical mitosis and multinucleated keratinocytes [11].…”
