Benign Cephalic Histiocytosis with Diabetes Insipidus

Abstract: Benign cephalic histiocytosis is a rare skin condition consisting of small tan papules on the face and upper trunk that is believed not to be associated with internal organ involvement. The infiltrating histiocytes are not Langerhans' cells (LCs). We report a 5-year-old girl who presented with diabetes insipidus 1 year after developing multiple small brown asymptomatic skin papules. Histologic examination revealed a non-LC histiocytic proliferation in the dermis without epidermal invasion. She had infiltration… Show more

“…Nevertheless, there has been a report of an association with diabetes insipidus (DI) and another with type 1 diabetes mellitus. 6,7 Other histiocytoses such as JX may also be associated with DI. 8 BCH lesions heal spontaneously after months or years; however, exacerbations may occur and the condition may relapse, presenting as JX.…”

“…[3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10] Furthermore, cases exist that exhibit concomitant lesions of LCH and non-LCH, and cases where LCH cells were converted into mature histiocytes with chemotherapy; thereby providing further evidence that an overlap exists both within and between the various histiocytoses. 5,6,[8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16] Herein we present a patient who does not easily fit into either the non-LCH or LCH category, but rather displayed clinical and histologic features that bridged both conditions. Through this novel case we review what is currently known about the various conditions classified under the non-LCH and LCH rubric.…”
