Benign and Malignant Breast Lesions: Efficacy of Real Time Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound vs. Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Abstract: CEUS seems to be a reliable method to differentiate breast lesions, since it provides typical enhancement patterns. Contrast sonographic perfusion curves correlate well with MRI wash in--wash out curves.

“…Although the current literature does not yet offer vast experience of the quantitative evaluation of breast masses, the application of CE-US in the senology field is a diagnostic practice that is increasingly widely used with promising results [16][17][18][19][20][21][22]; CE-US would, indeed, appear to be a reliable technique in the characterisation of breast masses on account of its ability to explore the vascular pattern, with good correlation with the same kind of evaluation conducted using breast MRI.…”

“…4, MAY 2010 evaluation of palpable abnormalities. A recent study by Ricci et al 5 on a series of 50 lesions comparing CEUS with MRI resulted in a sensitivity of CEUS of 100%, with a specificity of 87.5%, which was comparable to MRI. The higher specificity could well be attributable to time/enhancement evaluation, which was performed in the Italian study but not in our study.…”

“…This software is a specific sonographic quantification software, based on pixel-by-pixel signal intensity over time to obtain contrast-enhanced sonographic perfusion maps for each stenosis [19]. In all cases, regions of interest were chosen in the affected region containing the full bowel wall (through the full thickness of a longitudinal segment of the bowel) surrounding the stenosis.…”
