Benefits of Perineal Colostomy on Perineal Morbidity After Abdominoperineal Resection

Abstract: Perineal colostomy is a safe and functionally acceptable procedure for perineal reconstruction after abdominoperineal resection for rectal adenocarcinoma. In the present study, there was no additional morbidity related to perineal colostomy, and this procedure was associated with a decrease in perineal morbidity and healing time compared with primary perineal closure, in particular, after radiotherapy treatment.

“…After deduplication, the combined search yielded 1081 articles, of which 26 were identified as potentially eligible. After contacting the authors, individual patient data were provided in six [4][5][6][22][23][24] and aggregate data in four. [25][26][27][28] An additional of 4 studies with full text of the original paper only were included.…”

“…The perineal wound healing rate (healed wounds) at 6 and 12 weeks was 70.9% and 90.3% versus 50% and 73% in the PPC group and non‐PPC group, respectively. Healing after a perineal colostomy occurred more rapidly in Kirzin's study 19. The RAM flap decreased wound healing time 14, 15.…”
