Benefits of jasmonate-dependent defenses against vertebrate herbivores in nature

Abstract: Endogenous jasmonates are important regulators of plant defenses. If and how they enable plants to maintain their reproductive output when facing community-level herbivory under natural conditions, however, remains unknown. We demonstrate that jasmonate-deficient Nicotiana attenuata plants suffer more damage by arthropod and vertebrate herbivores than jasmonate-producing plants in nature. However, only damage by vertebrate herbivores translates into a significant reduction in flower production. Vertebrate stem… Show more

“…This transcription factor may therefore represent a target for the integration of IAA and JA signaling. While IAA strongly potentiated the accumulation of stem phenolamides, it had little effect on the accumulation of other JA-dependent secondary metabolites, including nicotine and 7-hydroxygeranyllinalool diterpene glycosides (Machado et al, 2013(Machado et al, , 2016Paschold et al, 2007;Jimenez-Aleman et al, 2015). This result is consistent with earlier studies showing neutral to negative effects of auxin application on nicotine accumulation in Nicotiana spp.…”

“…The stems of N. attenuata are often attacked by herbivores, including stem borers (Diezel et al, 2011b;Lee et al, 2016), and are very important for plant fitness (Machado et al, 2016). We observed a strong up-regulation of defensive secondary metabolites in the stems in response to M. sexta attack (Fig.…”

“…These results are consistent with the hypothesis that TEs, which have often been considered as "junk" DNA, can be important orchestrators of the gene expression remodeling that is required for the evolution of adaptive traits. Because native Nicotiana species do not survive in nature without the ability to produce large quantities of nicotine to ward off attackers (27), it might be that this junk has facilitated innovations essential for their survival.…”

“…The facilitation process reduces plant reproductive potential beyond the individual or combined effect of both stresses. Jasmonate signalling is a highly polymorphic trait in N. attenuata (D. Li, Baldwin, & Gaquerel, , ; Machado et al, ; Schuman, Heinzel, Gaquerel, Svatos, & Baldwin, ), which partially accounts for the asymmetric herbivore damage under natural conditions (Machado, McClure, et al, ; Kallenbach et al, ; Steppuhn, Schuman, & Baldwin, ). Our experiments suggest that nematode attack might exert selective pressure against jasmonate signalling and could therefore be one of the factors that favours polymorphisms in jasmonate signalling and jasmonate‐independent defensive mechanisms in nature (Machado et al, ; Machado, Zhou, et al, ).…”
