Benefits and problems of chrome tanning in leather processing: Approach a greener technology in leather industry

Abstract: Tanning is the process of converting the raw skin and hides from different animals into a sustainable and manageable material called leather. Leather making is a very long process and consists of many different chemical and mechanical process steps. The most important step of the whole leather making process is the tanning step, which is performed commonly either by vegetable or mineral tanning. More than 85-90% of the leather making is performed by chrome tanning, which is the most common type of mineral tann… Show more

“…ermal stability results of the samples are different. One of the reasons for this difference is the difference in salt content used during samples pickling and another possible reason is that the collagen structure of the skin may vary from sample to sample; if the collagen fiber of the skin is highly crosslinked in nature, it greatly affects the mentioned property [1,4]. Generally, by recycling the salt from cured skin, it is possible to it for pickling purpose and it has a positive effect on tear strength of the treated skin compared to conventionally pickled one.…”

“…Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) established large units of tannery industries at Hemayetpur, Savar, which is the outskirt of the capital city of Bangladesh [2]. Leather is a strong, fexible, and durable material obtained from tanning, or chemical treatment, of animal skins and hides to prevent decay [3,4]. Turning of skins and hides into leather requires the use of a number of chemicals.…”
