Beneficial Effects of ε-Viniferin on Obesity and Related Health Alterations

Abstract: Viniferin is a phenolic compound belonging to the group of stilbenoids. In particular, ε-viniferin is a dimer of resveratrol, found in many plant genders, among which grapes (Vitis vinifera) are a primary source. Due to the fact that ε-viniferin is mainly present in the woody parts of plants, their use as a source of this bioactive compound is a very interesting issue in a circular economy. Both, in vitro studies carried out in pre-adipocytes and mature adipocytes and in vivo studies addressed in mice show tha… Show more

“…In a study conducted by Timmers and colleagues [35], the impact of a 30-day oral supplementation regimen with pure trans-Resveratrol (at a daily dose of 150 mg) on metabolic alterations in obese individuals was investigated. The findings of this research shed light on the significant scientific implications of trans-Resveratrol supplementation.…”

“…SIRT1 plays a role in regulating cellular energy production, while PGC-1α is involved Scientiae Radices, 2(3), 268-294 (2023) 280 in mitochondrial biogenesis and oxidative metabolism. These effects imply that trans-Resveratrol may have the potential to enhance the body metabolic activity and energy production, which can be crucial for individuals struggling with obesity [35].…”

“…Phytoalexins are essential molecules that play critical roles in protecting plants against pathogenic microorganisms. Among these bioactive compounds, trans-resveratrol and trans-ε-viniferin have been extensively studied for their wide-ranging health benefits in humans, including anticancer, cardioprotective, and antioxidant effects [9,10]. Additionally, they exhibit antifungal properties and serve as natural preservatives in wine production [11].…”

“…In particular, trans -resveratrol has gained worldwide attention for its beneficial effects on human health. In addition, its oxidative polymerization produces oligomers, including trans -ε-viniferin, which have many beneficial biological properties [ 14 , 15 , 16 ], including antimicrobial, anticancer, hepatoprotective, and antioxidant properties [ 17 , 18 ]. These compounds are found in grapes, berries, and nuts but are also readily contained in viticulture by-products.…”
