Beneficial effects of xenon inhalation on behavioral changes in a valproic acid-induced model of autism in rats

Abstract: BackgroundXenon (Xe) is a noble gas that has been used for the last several decades as an anesthetic during surgery. Its antagonistic effect on glutamate subtype of NMDA (N-methyl-d-aspartate) receptors resulted in evaluation of this gas for treatment of CNS pathologies, including psychoemotional disorders. The aim of this study was to assess the behavioral effects of acute inhalation of subanesthetic concentrations of Xe and to study the outcomes of Xe exposure in valproic acid (VPA)-induced rodent model of a… Show more

“…Nevertheless, this deficit was diminished by the end of weaning, i.e., PND 21 ( Figure 4 ). The motor coordination delay was observed in other Shank3 mutant strain ( Shank3 Δ4–22 ) as well as in other models of ASD [ 22 , 33 , 34 , 35 ]. The delay in acquisition of postural reflexes could be an important early indicator of motor impairment in this model.…”

“…The social novelty test was performed to study the social preference between familiar and unfamiliar rats in T-maze. The test was performed with a dam and an unfamiliar non-lactating female on PND 22, and with a sibling rat and non-sibling rat on PND 33, in red light (4 lux), according to the protocol described in Dobrovolsky et al (2019) . The T-maze ( Figure 1C ) had 35 cm high opaque walls, 10 cm × 26 cm starting compartment, and 10 cm × 50 cm two side compartments.…”
