Beneficial effects of small-incision cataract surgery in patients demonstrating reduced ocular blood flow characteristics

Abstract: Purpose To investigate intraocular pressure (IOP) and ocular haemodynamics following small incision cataract surgery. Methods Systemic and ocular haemodynamics, and IOP, were measured pre-operatively and 1 month post-operatively, in 25 eyes of 25 patients (mean age 72.677.9 years) scheduled for small incision cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation; these values were compared to an untreated age-matched healthy group (n ¼ 25, mean age 72.375

“…The cataract surgery may have an impact on the blood flow velocity, and reduced oxygen consumption secondary to an extraction of the human lens could also lead to increased retinal oxygen saturation (Hilton et al. ). However, for the measurements taken 3 months after surgery, we expect that the blood flow velocity returned to normal (Rainer et al.…”

“…So we wonder whether the uctuation of intraocular perfusion pressure during phacoemulsi cation affect fundus microcirculation and then affect the patient's postoperative vision. Many literatures have reported the effects of phacoemulsi cation cataract surgery on ocular hemodynamics by using various techniques [10][11][12][13].…”
