Beneficial effects of hesperidin following cis-diamminedichloroplatinum-induced damage in heart of rats

Abstract: Hesperetin treatment leads to a decrease in oxidative stress, and associated histological damage. The findings of the current study suggest that HP has a protective effect against CP-induced cardiotoxicity.

“…In rats hesperidin (50 mg/kg/day HP, 14 days, oral gavage) was found to protect rat cardiac function treated by the anticancer drug cisplatin, [95]. With a shorter treatment at a higher dose, hesperidin treatment (200 mg/kg hesperidin/rat, 3 days, oral gavage) attenuates myocardial I/R injury by suppressing myocardial apoptosis, the inflammatory response and oxidative stress via PI3K/Akt pathway activation and HMGB1 (high-mobility group box 1) inhibition in rats [96].…”

“…Hesperidin (HSP, 3,5,7-trihydroxy-4-methoxy-flavanone-7-rhamnoglucoside), largely isolated from citrus fruits and a member of the flavanone group, exhibits antioxidative, anti-inflammatory [19,20], antihypercholesterolemic [21,22], and antihyperglycemic [23] activities. In recent studies, beneficial effects of hesperidin following toxicity by some compounds have been shown [24][25][26][27][28]. Also, HSP significantly protected against hepatotoxicity induced by lipopolysaccharide [29], cadmium [30], acetaminophen [31], and carbon tetrachloride [32] in rats.…”

“…However, there are serious side-effects in addition to its clinical effi cacy (3). Although considered rare (20), cardiotoxicity as a diverse effect of cisplatin therapy has been reported in numerous studies (8,(21)(22)(23)(24).…”
