Beneficial Effect of Virgin Coconut Oil on Alloxan-Induced Diabetes and Microbiota Composition in Rats

Abstract: The gut microbiota is composed of a diverse population of obligate and facultative anaerobic microorganisms which are shown to influence host metabolism and immune homeostasis. This study investigated the effects of virgin coconut oil on the weekly fasting glycaemia, daily food and water intake and weekly body mass gain over 16 weeks, as well as the changes in composition of gut microbiota in both non-diabetic and alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Although the intake of virgin coconut oil did not decrease the dia… Show more

“…The MR in the present study contained coconut oil and palm oil. 3 Recent studies suggest that coconut oil may have a beneficial role in modulating the human bacterial community, increasing Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium's population (Djurasevic et al, 2018;Rolinec et al, 2020), as observed in our study. However, palm oil may not have the same beneficial effects as coconut 3 Trouw Nutrition: Personal Communication.…”

“…In addition, both human and animal studies have indicated that abundance of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium decreases in diabetic rats and T2D patients 23,24. Djurasevic et al found that virgin coconut oil affected some secondary parameters in diabetic rats and significantly increased the abundance of probiotic bacteria, such as Lactobacillus, Allobaculum , and Bifidobacterium spp 25. Previous studies also found increased relative abundance of Bifidobacterium in T2D patients after treatment with metformin 26,27.…”

“…is may or may not be generalizable to human populations where triglyceride levels have been found to rise after coconut oil supplementation. A more recent study on alloxan-induced diabetic rats showed that virgin coconut oil intake resulted in reduction in food intake and body weight gain, as well as improvement in microbiota profile (increase in certain probiotic bacteria) in diabetic rats [24]. A study on C57/BL6 male mice fed a diet moderately high in fat from coconut oil + soybean oil vs. coconut oil only or fructose only showed that addition of soybean oil was most detrimental to metabolic outcomes such as diabetes, insulin resistance, and fatty liver [25].…”
