Benefical effects of lycopene against contrast medium-induced oxidative stress, inflammation, autophagy, and apoptosis in rat kidney

Abstract: Currently, the number of imaging and interventional procedures that use contrast agents (CAs) is gradually increasing. Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) is the most important CA-related complication. Oxidative stress plays a significant role in its pathophysiology. Lycopene (LPN) is a natural substance with strong antioxidant capacity. The present study aimed to investigate the potential preventive effects of LPN against CIN. In total, 28 male Wistar albino rats were divided into 4 groups with 7 rats… Show more

“…Additionally, we found that lycopene ameliorated inflammation as manifested by reduction of IL-1b, IL-2, IL-6 and TNF-a and by increase IL-10 levels in blood, similarly to other groups [50,51]. It has also been reported that lycopene displays anti-inflammatory effects in different models [52,53]. Accordingly, in the present study administration of lycopene decreased serum cytokine levels concomitantly with a decrease in testes inflammatory response (as reported in a previous study of our group).…”

“…14 Our previous work demonstrated a significant increase in cleaved caspase-3 as a marker of apoptosis in rats with CN compared with a control group. 15 The present study showed similar results regarding increased levels of cleaved caspase-3 in a different model of CN, compared with our previous study. 15 Autophagy is a tightly regulated, highly conserved physiologic process that involves recycling cytoplasmic proteins and molecules within autophagolysosomes.…”

“…It reduces TNF-α via the receptor of advanced glycation end products which is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily (Pierine et al, 2014). Lyc significantly improved oxidative stress, inflammation, lipid peroxidation, autophagy, and apoptosis in rats with contrast induced nephrotoxicity (Buyuklu et al, 2015). Mel reduced the oxidative burden, attenuated the chronic inflammation and limited apoptosis.…”
