Bending of poly(vinyl alcohol)–poly(sodium acrylate) composite hydrogel in electric fields

Abstract: SYNOPSISBending of poly( vinyl alcohol) hydrogel mixed with poly (sodium acrylate) chains, PVA-PAA gel, under the influence of dc electric fields was studied. The PVA-PAA gel was prepared by repeatedly freezing and thawing a mixture of PVA and polyacrylic acid aqueous solutions. The PVA-PAA gel was a hydrogel with the PAA chains, which were entangled with the PVA polymer network and were fixed in the gel. The PVA-PAA gel bent toward the negative electrode in electrolyte solutions under dc electric fields as di… Show more

“…[127,128] Shiga et al carried out an extensive series of studies on poly(vinyl alcohol) gel actuators driven by electrical and solvent activation. [42,[129][130][131][132][133][134] Even with small forces, gels can be used to transport ''cargo'' as they expand and contract in a tube. [135] The response of a gel in an electrical field is a coupling of electrical, chemical, and mechanical effects.…”

“…Shiga and co-workers carried out an extensive series of studies on poly(vinyl alcohol)-polyacrylic acid gel actuators driven electrically (Figure 1.5) [136,[139][140][141][142][143]. These gels are prepared by a freeze-thaw method that produces a strong and highly porous structure.…”

“…Therefore, superabsorbents have great advantages over traditional water-absorbing materials such as cotton, pulp, and sponge, and have found a variety of valuable applications. [1][2][3] Because of their excellent characteristics, these superabsorbents are widely used in many fields such as agriculture and horticulture, 4,5 sanitary goods, 6 sealing composites, 7 and medicine for drug-delivery systems, 8 for example. The synthesis of new superabsorbents and the development of their applications are still interesting research areas.…”
