Bending Behavior of Lightweight Wood-Based Sandwich Beams with Auxetic Cellular Core

Abstract: The work concerns a three-point bending test of beams made of plywood, high density fibre boards, cardboard, and wood-epoxy mass. The goal of the investigation was to determine the effect of thickness and type of wood-based facings on stiffness, strength, ability to absorb, and dissipate the energy of sandwich beams with an auxetic core. The cognitive goal of the work was to demonstrate the possibility of using recycled materials for facings and cores instead of popular wood composites. Experimental studies an… Show more

“…Baca Lopez and Ahmad estimated the best material sandwich structured arrangement design to enhance the mechanical properties [20]. Peliński and Smardzewski determined the effect of thickness and type of wood-based facings on stiffness, strength, ability to absorb, and dissipate the energy of sandwich beams with an auxetic core [21]. Yan et al conducted a large experiment on three typical blade sandwich structures to simulate the natural lightning-induced arc effects [22].…”

“…Some of the first comprehensive studies on the application, manufacturing, and properties of paper honeycomb panels were done by Hänel and Weinert [ 12 ] and Poppensieker and Thömen [ 13 ]. Many studies were made to evaluate the mechanical properties of honeycomb panels [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ]. Other studies investigated the possibilities for optimisation of the structure of paper honeycomb panels.…”

“…The relative density of cells significantly affects their mechanical strength [ 33 ]. Using an auxetic core and facings of plywood and cardboard significantly reduces the amount of dissipated energy [ 21 ].…”

“…The finite element method (FEM) facilitates significant reductions in resources (human, materials, machining cost) to reconstruct the structure if necessary or to completely change the idea. FEM method with the use of experimental data allows one to achieve satisfying results with project validation and detection of failure points, significantly narrowing the field of research and shortening the duration of work on new materials …”
