Bending analysis of soft core sandwich plates with embedded shape memory alloy wires using three-dimensional finite element method

Abstract: In this article, bending behavior of the sandwich plates with embedded shape memory alloy wires in their face sheets is studied. Three-dimensional finite element method is used for constructing and analyzing the sandwich plates with flexible core and two stiff face sheets. Some important points such as continuity conditions of the displacements, satisfaction of inter-laminar transverse shear stresses, conditions of zero transverse shear stresses on the upper and lower surfaces and in-plane and transverse flexi… Show more

“…By applying voltage to the SMA wires of the bottom face sheet, because of their electrical resistance, the wire temperature increases and they are activated, transformed, and then get shorter. This process recovers a tensional force along the SMA wires which in turn applies a compressional in-plane force to the bottom face sheet which reduces the deflection of the plate [28,37]. If the transverse load is applied to the bottom face sheet, the SMA wires of the top face sheet must be activated, reversely.…”

“…In addition, composite sandwich plate embedded with SMA wires or layers was studied by researchers recently. Bending of a composite sandwich plate embedded with SMA wires in the face sheets was numerically analyzed by Kheirikhah et al [37]. They used finite element method to compare the effect of various parameters on bending of sandwich plates such as plate dimensions, SMA diameter, boundary conditions, and wires place.…”

“…Also, because of shape-memory effect, they can be actuated to control the shape of the structures. Hence, using the SMA wires in the composite and sandwich structures has many advantages and studying the mechanical behavior of them is needed [2].…”

“…Birman [34] studied the buckling analysis of the composite sandwich panels in which the SMA wires were placed to the core. Three-dimensional FEM is used by Kheirikhah et al [2] to investigate the bending behavior of the soft-core sandwich plates in which SMA wires have been lain in their face sheets. Samadpour et al [35] calculated the nonlinear natural frequencies of thermally buckled sandwich plates armed with SMA wires.…”

“…dynamics, buckling, optimization) (Khalili et al, 2013;Kheirikhah et al, 2012;Kuo et al, 2009;Lee et al, 1999;Park et al, 2004). There have also been works devoted to high-order beam theories modified to model the active laminate behavior Eshghinejad and Elahinia (2011); Kheirikhah et al (2012); Mirzaeifar et al (2013); Zakerzadeh et al (2011). While less computationally expensive than FEA, these numerical solutions remain computationally expensive because of the high-order theory.…”
