Evaluating challenges to Industry 4.0 initiatives for supply chain sustainability in emerging economies Abstract: Industry 4.0 initiatives can influence whole business system via transforming the means the products are designed, produced, delivered and discarded. Industry 4.0 is relatively novel to developing nations, especially in India and needs a clear definition for proper understanding and practice in business. This paper aims to recognize key challenges to Industry 4.0 initiatives and analyze the identified key challenges to prioritize them for effective Industry 4.0 concepts for supply chain sustainability in emerging economies by taking Indian manufacturing industry perspective. Industry 4.0 initiatives can help industries to incorporate environmental protection and control initiatives as well as process safety measures in supply chains towards sustainable supply chains. However, adoption of Industry 4.0 initiatives are not so easy due to existence of many challenges. Therefore, the present research identifies 18 key challenges to Industry 4.0 initiatives for developing supply chain sustainability using an extensive literature review. These challenges were analyzed through 96 responses received from Indian manufacturing sector using a questionnaire based survey. Explanatory Factor Analysis results classified identified challenges into four key dimensions of challenges. Analytical Hierarchy Process further ranks the identified dimensions of challenges and related challenges. Findings of the study revealed that Organizational challenges holds the highest importance followed by Legal and ethical issues, Strategic challenges, and Technological challenges. This work is very useful for practitioners, policy makers, regulatory bodies and managers to develop an in-depth understanding of Industry 4.0 initiatives and eradicate the potential challenges in adopting Industry 4.0 initiatives for supply chain sustainability.

To improve the quality of life and achieve sustainability Internet of Things (IoT) plays a significant role. Waste can be converted to high value asset if treated properly with smart solutions. This study aims to develop an exploratory framework in the adoption of smart waste management in developing economies such as India analysing the various deferring parameters. To accomplish this aim the present study consists of two phases: In the first phase barriers in the adoption of IoT for smart waste management were identified after an extensive literature review and discussion with selected experts in this field. In the second phase the quantitative analysis using Fuzzy DEMATEL (Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory) method was performed on the selected barriers. The fuzzy DEMATEL methodology helps in prioritizing the most significant barrier by separating them into cause-effect group. The data were analysed on comparative basis based on two different perception to provide more detailed insight on the problems faced while smart waste management implementation. The results discloses that “Lack of government strict regulatory policies”, “Lack of proper Financial planning” and “Lack of benchmarking processes” are among the most critical causal barriers towards IoT based smart waste management that are hindering the vision of efficient waste management system. Further “Difficulty in implementing innovative technologies” and “Absence of Dynamic Scheduling and Routing” fall under significant potential causal effect category. The most prominent effect barriers are “Lack of awareness among community”, “Lack of source segregation and recycling commitment” and “Lack of service provider’s” which was concluded in results considering the comparison parameters from different perspective. The study also suggest that the effect barriers can be overcome automatically with mitigating the causal barriers in the long run. The comparative details of the study will further help the policy makers, stakeholders and government experts to frame policies and interventions to eradicate the identified barriers towards an efficient and innovative system for waste handling.

PurposeThe selection of effective library software not only plays an important role for students, academic staff and the library staff but also helps an institution by having the library management system more centralized. Therefore, the aim of this study is to develop a multiple-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) cause and effect factor model for the implementation of the Greenstone Digital Library (GSDL) software.Design/methodology/approachA thorough review of the literature is conducted to develop an initial list of the appropriate evaluation factors that play a significant role in the implementation of GSDL software. The data were collected from a domain of experts in the library sciences field. A combined approach of Delphi-DEMATEL methods is employed for the definition of these factors and to construct an MCDA cause-effect model which represents their relationships.FindingsThe DEMATEL analysis resulted in the division of all factors into two groups, causes and effects. The results show that content management, having a user-friendly interface and usability, information search and retrieval and authentication and authorization fall into the cause group. These factors directly affect the remaining factors. Content acquisition, classification, access, control and privacy management and metadata submission and support fall into the effect group. The research findings can help library professionals to make effective decisions to facilitate the successful implementation of GSDL software in a library and the enhancement of library technology.Practical implicationsThe results of this study can be useful for library professionals and decision-makers to select the most appropriate software for the implementation of library technology. The study analysis shows that for GSDL, user-friendly interface and usability, information search and retrieval plus authentication and authorization factors have seven positive relationships with other factors. Secondly, content management and classification have six relationships with other factors. Thirdly, access control plus privacy and management have two relationships. Content acquisition has only one relationship with other factors. It is recommended that the user-friendly interface and usability, information search and retrieval, as well as authentication and authorization should be the initial areas of focus if GSDL is to be implemented successfully in digital libraries.Originality/valueThe proposed MCDA cause-effect model can be useful for library professionals or decision-makers in the context of selecting software to be implemented in a library and to minimize implementation costs.
