“…The LH antenna design currently foreseen for ITER is a PAM concept, which has been successfully validated on FTU [40] and more recently on Tore Supra in steady-state conditions [33,34]. In the frame of this EFDA task, a benchmark of the LH coupling codes TOPLHA and ALOHA has been conducted [41,42]. Comparison between both codes was made on one part of a 5 GHz module designed to launch a power spectrum centred around n = 2.0, as described in [43].…”

“…This code extends to Lower Hybrid launchers the well known capabilities of its predecessor, allowing the handling of realistic geometries with accurate plasma description. The confidence gained in the validation campaigns has then motivated the systematic use of TOPLHA in the actual design and optimization of LH antennas ( [18]). Furthermore, TOPLHA code is fully parallelized, this leading not only to a remarkable saving in terms of computation time, but also to the removal of any limitation on the complexity of the simulated geometries and, specifically, on the number of waveguides.…”

“…To start with, an exhaustive comparison has been carried out with ALOHA code on the Tore Supra C2 antenna and, in the frame of EFDA task HCD-08-03-01, on a ITERrelevant PAM (Passive-Active Multi-junction) launcher; even though both validation campaigns are already part of published work ( [9], [18]) we would like to provide here a short outline of the second comparison.…”

“…ITER mechanical constraints, such as the port plug size or the rear flange dimensions, have been taken into account since the initial RF design. In parallel to the RF design, the coupling to the plasma of the launcher has been studied with the ALOHA, GRILL3D and TOPLHA codes and results are in good agreement [7].…”
