“…EBS belugas are thought to preferentially feed on Arctic cod (Loseto et al 2009;Quakenbush et al 2015), and satellite telemetry has revealed tagged whales making repeated dives to depths of ∼200-400 m near the Beaufort Sea shelf break Hauser et al 2015), areas found to support dense aggregations of adult Arctic Cod (Geoffroy et al 2016;Majewski et al 2017). Further, analysis of beluga locations collected during aerial surveys in August of 2007-2009, suggest that habitat selection in the offshore Beaufort Sea is likely driven by feeding opportunities as beluga showed preference for environmental conditions associated with forage fish aggregations (Hornby et al 2017).
