“…Since the mixture is very viscous, high energy input by the mixture is necessary, which influences the integrity of the Novozym 435. Recent work from Ansorge-Schumacher et al suggests that this might be a major problem . The diameter of Novozym 435 beads is in the range of 300−900 μm .…”

“…The fixed bed reactor approach was chosen for two main reasons: (i) easy and efficient enzyme recycling due to a permanent separation of product and catalyst and (ii) avoiding unnecessary mechanical stress to the immobilized enzyme (as in the case of stirring). The latter effect has already been described in several studies using batch stirred tank reactors (STRs). , The mechanical fragility of the solid support (methacrylate/divinylbenzene) is often the main reason for limited catalyst lifetime when used in STRs . Furthermore, abrasion and grinding of the carrier results in the production of fine powder, causing problems with blocking of filters when applied on a large scale .…”

“…A similar observation was made in our case using a 3-bladed spiral propeller instead of a 4-bladed flat turbine (unpublished data), suggesting that homogeneity of highly viscous mixtures can be reached optimally in an STR with stirrers that induce vertical convection due to a rather axial flow. Indeed, studies from Wiemann et al and Ansorge-Schumacher et al are suggesting that viscous mixtures requiring high energy input might have a deleterious effect on the physical and mechanical properties of immobilized formulations [ 71 , 72 ]. To corroborate these affirmations, a study from Keng et al used a Rushton turbine impeller, providing this time a radial flow that was seemingly more adapted to the relatively lower viscosities of their n -hexane-based mixture [ 73 ].…”
