A comparative analysis of the habitats of six plant communities of the Littorelletea uniflorae Br.-Bl. et R.Tx. 1943 class (Ranunculo-Juncetum bulbosi (Nordh. 1921) Oberd. 1957, Lobelietum dortmannae (Osvald 1923) Tx. ap. Dierss. 1972, Myriophyllo-Littorelletum Jeschke 1959 (variant with Littorella uniflora and variant with Myriophyllum alterniflorum), Luronietum natantis Szan´kowski 1998 n.n. and Isoe¨tetum lacustris Szan´kowski et Kłosowski 1996 n.n.) was conducted in Poland.The communities differ considerably from each other with respect to water and substrate properties, and attain their optimum development under specific habitat conditions. The present study reveals that, in Poland, the substrate properties of the above communities, with the exception of calcium content, vary to the same extent as those of most communities typical of eutrophic lakes.

From a survey of the riparian and aquatic plant species of 37 shallow and often ephemeral pools in mid-Wales a new sub-association of the Pilularietum globuliferae Tuxen 1955 is described in relation to water chemistry and other environmental parameters from 20 of these pools where either or both Apium inundatum and Pilularia globulifera were present in the new sub-association apietosum inundati of the Pilularietum globuliferae Tuxen, 1955 within the Apio-Pilularion globuliferae Schoof-van Pelt 1973. Nomenclature: follows Clapham, Tutin and Moore (1987) for vascular plants and Smith (1978) for Bryophytes.

In 1989, in the southeast of the Sakhalin Island and south of the village Okhotskoye, Isoetes asiatica (Makino) Makino and I. beringensis Kom. were detected in 24 oligotrophic lakes for the first time on Sakhalin. These are stands of the community of Iso~tetum asiaticae ass. nov. which in the majority of the lakes form a characteristic pioneer vegetation of the shallow littoral zones. In addition to poor-species dominance stands of both of the Isoetes species, penetration stages of both of these species as well as stages rich in Comarum palustre, Eleocharis acicularis and Potamogeton species can be differentiated. Besides the structure of the species, the site conditions, particularly of the water bodies are described. The ion content is represented by absolute and relative ion field diagrams exemplified by 7 selected water bodies. The ion content is characterized by sodium and chloride which are prevailing, while calcium and magnesium as well as hydrogen carbonate and sulphate exist in low quantitative proportions only. The indicator values of individual characteristics and the complex characteristics of the IsoOtes lakes are discussed. The hydrochemical characteristics of the Sakhalin, Kuriles and Kamchatka Iso~tes waters are compared with the IsoOtes water bodies of North America and Europe. The danger to Iso~tes water bodies is discussed, necessary protective measures are defined.
