“…Toward this end, researchers have begun to consider sense of purpose, defined as the perception that one has an overarching aim or direction guiding them through life and influencing daily engagements (Ryff, 1989;Scheier et al, 2006). The focus on this disposition is informed by its connections to cognitive performance (Dewitte et al, 2021;Lewis et al, 2017;Sutin et al, 2022;Windsor et al, 2015), healthy behaviors (Hill et al, 2019;Kim et al, 2020), and social connections (Pfund, Hofer, et al, 2021;Weston et al, 2021). Sense of purpose has been shown to be a powerful promoter of healthy aging (Pfund and Hill, 2018;Pfund and Lewis, 2020;Zaslavsky et al, 2014), with recent evidence suggesting that it may be protective against constructs like depressive symptoms in the maintenance of higher cognitive functioning (Lewis and Hill, 2021).…”

“…Notably, romantic relationship quality showed incredibly high levels of stability, limiting the amount of change the sense of purpose would be able to predict. Even though sense of purpose also showed strong stability across the three months, it is seen that initial romantic relationship quality still predicted later sense of purpose, aligning with past work suggesting the importance of positive and supportive connections with others for sense of purpose (Pfund et al, 2021; Weston et al, 2020). With sense of purpose showing greater rank order stability in middle‐aged adulthood and less rank order stability in younger and older adulthood (Mann et al, 2021), future work should consider whether positive romantic relationships may play a larger role in purpose maintenance and enhancement earlier and later in the lifespan.…”

“…Another possibility is that sense of purpose and relationship qualities are linked through their shared associations with psychological well‐being. Sense of purpose is strongly associated with lower depressive symptoms (e.g., Pfund et al, 2021), and depression is a known risk factor for multiple aspects of relationship dysfunction (e.g., Davila, 2001 for a review). As such, it may be that purposeful individuals are less prone to depressive symptoms and that this assists them with romantic relationships.…”
