Objectives: Behçet's disease is an inflammatory rheumatic disease with recurrent scarring in the oral and genital area, as well as skin, eye, joint, vein, and nerve involvement. The aim of the study was to investigate the level of hearing in Behçet's disease and whether there is a change in hearing levels as the level of the disease increases. Methosd: In this study we examined 32 patients with Behçet's disease and 50 healthy volunteers. All patients were evaluated with audiometry, tympanometry and acoustic reflex tests, as well as detailed ear, nose, and throat examinations. Results: Sensorineural hearing loss was observed in 9.3% of the patients with Behçet's disease, according to the audiological data, and all patients were bilateral. We also observed sensorineural hearing loss to be the fifth most common symptom in our study. Especially in high frequencies, there was positive correlation between hearing levels and disease exposure time (p < 0.05). Conclusions: We think that the audiological examinations should be included in the routine checkups of Behçet's patients. In addition, a follow-up assessment of the hearing level of these patients with high frequency audiometry may be more meaningful.

Is There a Need for Audiologic Evaluation in Patients with Behçet Disease?

Behçet disease is known to be a multisystem condition. We conducted a study to determine the prevalence of hearing loss in patients with Behçet disease and to identify any associations between audiologic findings and other clinical manifestations and treatment. Our study group was made up of 41 adults with Behçet disease and 41 healthy sex-and age-matched controls. All patients and controls underwent a complete clinical otolaryngologic examination, which included pure-tone audiometry, acoustic impedance testing, and otoacoustic emissions testing. Audiology revealed that the prevalence of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) was significantly higher in the Behçet patients than in the controls-68.3 vs. 22.0% (p < 0.002). The duration of Behçet disease had no significant impact on whether patients did or did not experience hearing loss. Hearing loss was the fourth most common clinical finding in the Behçet group, after oral ulcers, genital ulcers, and skin lesions. We conclude that SNHL is present in a significant number of Behçet patients, and we suggest the need for an adequate investigation of hearing in the routine follow-up of these patients.

Review article. Syndromes which result in deaf blind person are different among adults compared to among children. Rubella syndrome and Down syndrome are the main causes of deaf blind people above 18 years of age. While in children, CHARGE syndrome is the main cause of deaf blind children. ENT physician should be aware of these syndromes for earlier detection of deaf blind persons. Deaf blind people need a great deal of help. Communication and education are crucial for them and need to be properly supported.
