Behçet’s Disease and Intracardiac Thrombosis: A Report of Three Cases

Abstract: We present three patients with Behçet's disease associated with intracardiac thrombus and pulmonary vascular involvement. One of these patients had also Budd-Chiari syndrome. All patients were treated with corticosteroid plus monthly intravenous cyclophosphamide as first line treatment and with no recurrences. Immunosuppressive therapy was successful in the treatment of intracardiac thrombus and also in the regression of pulmonary vascular thromboses in these patients. Intracardiac thrombus in Behçet's disease… Show more

“…Characteristic vasculitis is better evaluated in resection specimens, as in our case. Small calibrated veins, especially venules, are generally involved [ 6 , 8 ]. This pattern of vasculitis is characterized by intramural mononuclear cells and neutrophil infiltration; subsequently, fibrosis and luminal occlusion ensue [ 8 ].…”

“…Davatchi et al [ 7 ] included a total of 6500 BD patients within a period of 35 years and reported that vascular involvement occurred in 8.3% of patients, whereas large vein (vena cava) thrombosis occurred in 1.1% of patients. Arterial thrombus occurs more infrequently [ 1 , 6 , 7 ].…”

“…Cyclophosphamide is a milestone in the treatment of autoimmune diseases and several case reports found that it might be useful in the prevention of recurrent thrombotic events in these patients. [154][155][156][157][158]…”
