Behavioural State Cycles in Abnormal Infants

Abstract: SUMMARY Polygraphic methods were used to evaluate the percentage distribution of sleep and awake states and the mean duration of individual periods spent in these states in infants with Down's syndrome, bilirubinaemia and in a heterogeneous group of ‘high‐risk’ infants. Not unexpectedly, alterations from previously established normal values were found, as were differences in pattern between the groups. Infants with Down's syndrome spend more time awake at the expense of time in state 2 (active sleep), but prol… Show more

“…The pioneering studies of the French school (Dreyfus‐Brisac, 1970; Monod et al, 1972), and of Parmelee et al (1967, 1972), Prechtl et al, 1973, and Wolff, 1973 demonstrated that behavioral or EEG parameters can be used to predict the conceptual age (CA) of normal babies with an accuracy plus or minus three weeks. These parameters, however, were initially not quantified nor related to outcomes nor confirmed by serial tests.…”

“…Continuous monitoring of respiration for premature infants is critical to detect abnormalities in breathing and help develop early treatments to prevent significant hypoxia and central depression from apnea. A long-term continuous monitoring approach of respiration may also be used to assess sleep stage, which varies with different clinical conditions [4,5].…”

“…Toward this end, the assessment of newborn newborn behavioral organization accompanies neurologic assessment and reflects the newborn's underlying neurologic state. 1,2 Behavioral assessment identifies the newborn's current level of balance and smooth, integrated functioning as well as thresholds of disorganization. 3,4 Identifying and quantifying neurobehavioral organization and function in the newborn have become an essential component of comprehensive high-risk newborn care.…”
