Behavioural analysis of interactions between pedestrians and vehicles in street designs with elements of shared space

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThis paper describes the development and implementation of qualitative behavioural criteria in order to analyse the conduct of pedestrians and vehicles when they are required to interact with each other, with particular interest to street designs with elements of shared space. The new behavioural analysis technique is developed by identifying the fundamental principles that underpin existing traffic analyses, such as traffic conflicts techniques, and adapting those to a qualitative framework tha… Show more

“…Some of them have been chosen as case studies in different investigations on shared space and similar street schemes that allow pedestrians and vehicles to share the same surface, namely Biddulph (2010Biddulph ( , 2012b, Curl et al (2012Curl et al ( , 2015, Hammond and Musselwhite (2013), Havik et al (2015), Kaparias et al (2013Kaparias et al ( , 2015, Moody and Melia (2014), and MVA Consultancy (2011.…”

“…The existence of previous studies on Exhibition Road (Kaparias et al, 2013(Kaparias et al, , 2015MVA Consultancy, 2012, 2013a, 2013bSYSTRA, 2014) are also important for its selection, since it allows a broader understanding of the case in which different studies complement each other. Furthermore, Exhibition Road receives an intensive and heterogeneous pedestrian use, including visitors and locals, making it appropriate to investigate if frequency of use and familiarity to shared space schemes has an influence on street users.…”

“…They classified conflicts into the following types: braking conflict, weaving conflict, running conflict, and close-call conflict. Kaparias, Bell, Biagioli, Bellezza, and Mount (2014) presented a new behavioral analysis technique for vehiclepedestrian interactions. They classified events into the following types:…”

“…In urban downtown London, Exhibition Road which is home to many museums, cultural venues, as well as the Imperial College London, was transformed from a two way urban road to a shared space between 2008 and 2011. (Kaparias 2015) Similar to other shared space locations, Exhibition Road was crowded. In this case, not only was there a high Frosch 9 vehicular volume (Kaparias 2015), but there was a significant amount of pedestrians and parked vehicles as well stemming from the 11 million annual visitors to the Exhibition Road area.…”
