Behaviour of restrained steel beam with reduced beam section exposed to fire

Abstract: Reduced beam section (RBS) is one of the connection types, which is economical and popular for use in steel moment frames in seismic regions. By cutting some portions of the beam flanges near the column face, the RBS connections are designed to form plastic hinge within the RBS zone so that it could enhance the structural seismic performance. However, the steel beams with RBS connections have to provide robustness when exposed to fire. Although the responses of ordinary steel beams to elevated temperatures hav… Show more

“…Studies on the behavior of steel beams to non-uniform temperatures have also been performed through experiments and numerical simulations. Experimental works on the response of restrained steel beams in the case of uneven heating were also carried out by Li and Gou (2008) and Gou and Huang (2016). The experimental data in their study were used to verify the model in previous research (Zhang et al.…”

“…For example Santiago et al (2010) used a numerical model to investigate the connection effects on the behavior of steel sub-frame in natural fire conditions. Moreover, Maraveas et al (2017) and Guo and Huang (2016) investigated the behavior of steel beams with different restraints exposed to the fire, using numerical models and experimental tests. The effect of bolted single angle, shear-tab and bolted double angle connections on the fire performance of steel beam were investigated by Pakala and Kodur (2016) and .…”

“…Owing to their convenience, RBS connections are becoming increasingly popular in seismic areas since they were first proposed by Plumier [47] in 1990. Indeed, the RBS are being object of study by many researchers like Montuori [41], [40] in Italy; Pachoumis [45], [46], Sophianopoulos [55], Sofias [54] and Deri [14] in Greece; Engelhardt [20] in the USA; Deylami [15], Morshedi [42], Tahamouli [52] and Saleh [53] in Iran; Han [27], [26] in Korea, and many others around the world [9], [34], [59], [25], [44], [51].…”
