Behaviour of reinforced GFRP bars concrete beams having strengthened splices using CFRP sheets

Abstract: When glass fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bar splices are used in reinforced concrete sections, they affect the structural performance in two different ways: through the stress concentration in the section, and through the configuration of the GFRP–concrete bond. This study experimentally investigated a new method for increasing the bond strength of a GFRP lap (two GFRP bars connected together) using a carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheet coated in epoxy resin. A new splicing method was investigated t… Show more

“…The traditional technique of FRP strengthening is externally bonding the FRP sheets/plates onto the surface of RC members (e.g. Ahmad et al, 2021; Allawi et al, 2021; Cao et al, 2021; Mahmoud and Ali 2021; Oehlers et al, 2016; Teng et al, 2002). However, it was found that the externally bonded (EB) FRP is likely to debond from the RC members, and the EB FRP is sensitive to the environmental factors such as fire, incision and ultraviolet radiation (e.g.…”

“…It is important that ductility is taken into account prior to the failure of any structure. As compared to brittle structures, RC structures with ductile properties provide ample warning before failure [28][29][30][31]. e deflection ductility index of the specimen is derived using the load deflection diagram by using the following equations, displacement method in equation ( 1), and energy method in equation ( 2):…”

“…Extensive research has been conducted on retrofitting RC beams using FRP in the past decades [7][8][9][10]; most of which have been to achieve the maximum capacity of FRP and thus maximize the bearing capacity of existing beams.…”
