Behaviour of Plasma Renin Activity and Aldosterone During the First 72 H of Life

Abstract: Plasma renin activity (PRA) and plasma aldosterone concentrations (PAC) were determined in fifty normal newborns during the first 72 h of life. PRA was elevated in all cases and tends to increase from the first (6.79 +/- 0.69SE ng/ml/h) to the third day of life (8.24 +/- 0.96SE ng/ml/h). PAC was also elevated and rose from 24.06 +/- 3.23SE ng/dl on the first day to 39.20 +/- 4.25SE ng/dl on the third day. No significant correlation was observed between PRA and PAC. Serum sodium was within the normal range, whe… Show more

“…Serum renin concentration, assessed by radioimmunometric assay (Renin 3 Generation; Bio-Rad, ScheringCis-Bio, France), was 385 pg/mL in the donor and 296 pg/mL in the recipient, the mean Ϯ 95% confidence interval for neonates being 31.43 Ϯ 27.3 pg/mL in our institution. Serum aldosterone concentration, measured using a RIA kit (ALDO-CTK-2; Schering-Cis-Bio), was 292 pg/mL in the donor and 248 pg/mL in the recipient (within normal range) (18).…”

“…However transplacental transfer from the ewe to its foetuses was found to be negligible (Moncaup et al, 1980 ;Wintour et al, 1980). No relationship could be demonstrated between plasma Na and K concentrations and plasma aldosterone levels in lambs either before or after birth (Moncaup et al, 1980 (Giry and Delost, 1977) as well as in human infants (Sparano et al, 1978), foals (Giry et al, 1979), mice (Loctin, 1980) and calves (Safwate et al, 1982). Under our experimental conditions as in lambs kept with their dams after birth (Moncaup et al, 1980), no increase in plasma aldosterone concentration was observed between birth and day 7 in either the 9 NB lambs or the 10 DCS lambs ( fig.…”
