As part of RILEM TC 237-SIB, TG3 performed a Round Robin Test to evaluate the capacity to measure Poisson's ratio of an asphalt mixture in the laboratory and to check whether it could be considered as an isotropic property. Five laboratories located in five different countries took part in the testing program. This paper presents the different techniques used by the laboratories, reports the measured Poisson's ratios and comments upon the differences found between the results. Sinusoidal or haversine loading either in tension-compression or pure compression was applied to the specimens over a range of frequencies and temperatures. During the loading both the axial and radial strains were monitored to allow the complex Young's modulus and the complex Poisson's ratios to be calculated. It was found that the complex Young's modulus and the complex Poisson's ratios were very close in the Black Diagrams, but diverge sharply in the Cole-Cole plots. It was observed that the maximum difference between the complex Poisson's ratio in direction 2 and direction 3 is less than 0.05. It would appear that this difference is more related to measurement deviation than anisotropy of the material. Some differences were observed in the master curves of complex Young's modulus and complex Poisson's ratio obtained from the five laboratories; however these differences could in most cases be explained by temperature differences. It was concluded that within the linear viscoelastic range (small strains) the results from the different laboratories show similar rheological behavior and the material response follows the same trend.

Viscoelastic Behaviour Characterization of a Gap-graded Asphalt Mixture with SBS Polymer Modified Bitumen

A characterization of the linear thermo-viscoelastic behaviour of a gap-graded bituminous mixture with SBS-polymer modified bitumen and RAP aggregates is presented in this paper. A comparison was made, in terms of their viscoelastic behaviour, between this innovative mixture and two commonly used well-graded base-course French mixtures made with pure bitumen. The materials were also compared in terms of viscous dissipated energy. Complex modulus tests on cylindrical samples were performed for each mixture. The viscoelastic behaviour of the materials was modelled using the 2S2P1D (2 springs, 2 parabolic elements, 1 dashpot) constitutive model which was developed in the Laboratory of Civil Engineering and Construction (LGCB) of the ENTPE, University of Lyon. The tests results allowed validating the time-temperature superposition principle for the studied mixtures. Experimental and modelled complex modulus (|E*|) master curves were built for each material. The gap-graded mixture was found to present higher stiffness values at low frequency/high temperature conditions, lower viscous behaviour and lower values of viscous dissipated energy compared to the conventional mixtures. Complex modulus tests were also carried out on the polymer modified bitumen of the gap-graded mixture. A link between the viscoelastic behaviour of both binder and mixture could be established thanks to the SHStS transformation developed by the ENTPE team.

Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) and Recycled Asphalt Shingles (RAS) are valuable materials commonly reused in asphalt mixtures due to economic and environmental benefits. However, the aged binder in these materials may negatively influence the low temperature properties of the final asphalt mixtures. In this paper, the effect of adding RAP and RAS on low temperature properties of asphalt mixtures is investigated through Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) tests and rheological modelling. First, a set of fourteen asphalt mixtures containing different amounts of RAP and RAS are prepared and creep stiffness experimentally measured. Then, the Huet model and the Ecole Nationale des Travaux Publics de l'Etat (ENTPE) transformation are used to back calculate the asphalt binder creep stiffness from mixture experimental data. Finally, the model predictions are compared to the creep stiffness of the asphalt binders extracted from each mixture, and the results are discussed. Experimental measurements indicate that the addition of RAP and RAS significantly affects low temperature performance of asphalt mixture. Differences between back-calculated results and experimental data suggest blending between new and old binder is only partial. Based on the recent finding on diffusion studies, this effect may be associated to mixing and blending processes, to the effective contact between virgin and recycled materials and to the variation of the total virgin-recycled thickness of the binder film which may significantly influence the diffusion process.
