Significant racial and ethnic disparities in health care and service access exist. In the present article, we reviewed qualitative studies investigating the racism-related experiences of Black caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the U.S. health care system. Specifically, we examined institutional racism (i.e., systemic racism) and individual racism directed toward Black families when they seek diagnoses and services for their children with ASD. Additionally, we summarized culturally responsive and context-specific practice guidelines to work collaboratively with Black caregivers of children with ASD for applied behavior analysis practitioners.

The current mental health needs of Black populations are significantly heightened, as more public occurrences of racial discrimination, systematic oppression, and violence have shed light on the adversities Black people experience in their everyday life. Despite this, many Canadian Black people are underutilizing psychological resources. The dominant approaches to research and practice have historically focused on identifying and addressing barriers to clients seeking care, rather than accessibility and appropriateness of the services offered. There is currently a dearth of information considering how the current focus impacts racialized students in their counselling programmes, and consequently their work as student therapists. In this article, we extend the invitation to further consider, from the standpoint of a racialized student, an example of how “culture” is both taught and performed in the fields of counsellor education, with implications for supervised student therapeutic practices and beyond.

<i>This is a qualitative, phenomenological study of parents with children with autism who come from non-White backgrounds (N=7). Subjects were interviewed via recorded phone calls, during which they were asked a standard set of questions pertaining to their experiences with in-home family and child treatment. The problem examined in this study was the inequity experienced by families of color who have at least one child with autism and who received in-home early intervention autism services. Parents were interviewed to determine which aspects of treatment were perceived to be effective. The data were coded for emerging themes, with special attention given to opportunities for service amendment, seeking maximal perceived effectiveness. Families benefitted from an individualized approach to treatment that considered the family context, and culture, designed by listening to the family’s needs, concerns, and availability.   Assuming a one-size-fits-all approach, based on recommendations not made with diverse family backgrounds in mind, was less effective. Future directions in the field should include improved training for psychologists on cultural competence, encourage self-reflections on bias, and training on the development of individualized treatment plans.</i>
