Behavioral Evolution of Progressive Semantic Aphasia in Comparison with Nonfluent Aphasia

Abstract: Background: Patients with primary progressive aphasia (PPA) usually develop significant behavioral disturbances with progression of the disease. We tested our clinical observation that development of disruptive agitation is more likely in semantic than in nonfluent PPA and examined which clinical variables could be associated with this behavior. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed neuropsychiatric scores and the need for behavioral treatments in semantic PPA (n = 41) and nonfluent PPA (n = 39) cases and compa… Show more

“…Disinhibition, apathy, lack of empathy, compulsive behavior, and altered eating habits are cardinal features for bvFTD (Rascovsky et al 2011). These behavioral symptoms are also prominent in PSP (Kobylecki et al 2015), right temporal variant of svPPA (Seeley et al 2005), have been described in nfvPPA (G omez-Tortosa et al 2015) and as a possible clinical presentation of CBD (Murray et al 2007;Ling et al 2010;Lee et al 2011). Furthermore, depression is a commonly seen symptom in all neurodegenerative dementias.…”

“…Of clinical importance, unlike other variants, almost all cases with sv-PPA develop some degree of behavioral symptoms such as agitation and delusions that can become disruptive and require pharmacological intervention. 100 This fact prompts clinicians to monitor patients on a regular basis to allow early identification of nonlinguistic changes and advising of caregivers on mitigation of disruptive behaviors and prognosis.…”

“…Psychiatric and behavioral problems such as anxiety, irritability, aggression, disinhibition, depressive and psychotic symptoms may arise in PPA due to frontotemporal network damage [6,7]. In this study, a case was presented that has been undergoing psychiatric treatment for 30 years due to conversion disorder and depression, defined by the relatives as "forgetfulness" which develops as problems in understanding and explaining words.…”
