Background and AimsBrucellosis is one of the zoonotic diseases that endanger the health of the population, particularly in developing countries. This study aimed to assess risk perception and behaviors of livestock farmers on brucellosis based on PRECEDE model in a rural area in the northwest of Iran.MethodsThis was a cross‐sectional study conducted with 365 livestock farmers in rural areas of Germi, Iran. Participants were selected random sampling method. Data were gathered using a PRECEDE model based questionnaire consisted of five sections including demographic characteristics, predisposing factors (knowledge and attitudes), reinforcing factors, enabling factors, and brucellosis preventive behaviors.ResultsThe mean ± SD of age of participants was 47.1 ± 14.7 years. The state of knowledge about preventive behaviors and ways of disease transmission was evaluated as appropriate (with 87% and 81% of the maximum score, respectively). Three aspects of attitude in participants were desirable. Predisposing factors including knowledge of prevention ways, knowledge of transmission ways, and attitudes toward prevention, reinforcing factors, as well as education were significant predictors of brucellosis preventive behaviors. R2 and adjusted R2 were 0.312 and 0.310, respectively, according to which, about 31% of the changes in the brucellosis preventive behaviors explained by significant dependent variables.ConclusionsGiven that farmers are at particular high risk of exposing brucellosis, improving their knowledge and desirable attitudes of brucellosis is crucial to increasing control the disease.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasmosis is induced by Toxoplasma gondii, which affects 30 percent of the global population and is responsible for deaths related to foodborne pathogens. This study aimed to describe the seroprevalence of T. gondii infections in patients attending referral hospitals in the northwestern region of Saudi Arabia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The serology test results for T. gondii antibodies of 797 patients were retrospectively analyzed using the hospitals' database. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect anti-T. gondii antibodies (IgG and/or IgM). RESULTS: Overall, the prevalence of anti-T. gondii antibodies was 8.3%. Higher (9.9%) prevalence of positive results among patients aged 30 years and above was observed. Statistically, the various age groups (P = 0.031) were found to be significant. Female was noted to have increased (8.1%) seroprevalence, and the incidence of infection occurred largely among participants living in rural areas (8.2%). CONCLUSIONS: Toxoplasmosis remains a public health concern. The seroprevalence of T. gondii antibodies was relatively low in the study area. IgG antibodies to T. gondii were mainly detected. Increasing awareness on the mode of transmission, source of infection, and disease prevention through health education and dissemination is vital to reduce or eliminate toxoplasmosis.

The relative contribution of a theory-based intervention to modify high-risk behaviors in training programs is a major priority that remains an open question. Here, we tested whether the family-centered empowerment model used in the educational intervention was effective to modify high-risk behaviors of brucellosis via mother education. A quasi experimental study was conducted on 200 women presenting to healthcare practices in rural areas of Torbat-e Jam, Iran, from April 2020 to February 2021. Four rural areas were randomly assigned to the control and intervention groups. The intervention group received the training program, which included four 2-h sessions and consulting support via social network and messaging service. The control group did not receive any training. SPSS16 was implemented to test multiple statistical analyses. Our finding showed in the intervention group compared with the control group, knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy, self-esteem, and behavior outcomes were significantly changed (P < 0.001) across time during baseline through follow-up. Likewise, there are no differences (P > 0.05) in the change in construct of the family-centered empowerment model and risk behaviors in the control group from baseline to follow-up. Intervention based on a family-centered empowerment model is possible and very acceptable to modify high-risk behaviors of brucellosis by increasing an individual’s knowledge, changing attitude, and promoting self-efficacy and self-esteem.Trial registration: Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials (IRCT), IRCT20160619028529N12.
