Behavioral Characteristics of Weaned Piglets Mixed in Different Groups

Abstract: With regard to animal welfare concerns, behavioral information of weaned and mixed piglets is great interest in swine production. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the change in behavior of weaned piglets over time in two different groups (littermates and piglets from different litters) after mixing. Two weaned groups of piglets (72 individuals in all) housed either with littermates or with foreign piglets (6 individuals in 1.8 m×1.4 m pens, 28°C±1°C temperature) were observed with the aid of video tech… Show more

“…The frequency of the individual performing the behaviour, as well as the individual receiving the behaviour, was noted. The behavioural time values presented are the means and standard errors of the relative frequencies of each behaviour, calculated from the results obtained from the observation of each group (Rhim et al 2015;Hwang et al 2016).…”

“…Sow behavior count and AUC data showed lack of normality and heterogeneity of variance. Data were transformed using the equation (( X ’3 = log 10( X + 0.5) + 0.5) to achieve variance homogeneity ( Hwang et al, 2016 ). The transformed count behavior, FFA, and AUC data were analyzed by fitting a logistic model using the GLIMMIX procedure.…”

“…The mixed piglets are exposed to harsh conditions with changed social and physical environments. Moreover, considerable stress is caused by the changes in diets, rearing conditions, housing, and neighbors that result from mixing [ 11 , 12 ]. The behavior of piglets following mixing is an animal welfare concern, and it has bearing on the search for husbandry and care methods that reduce stress [ 13 , 14 ].…”
