Behavioral Assessment of Listening Effort Using a Dual-Task Paradigm

Abstract: Published investigations (n = 29) in which a dual-task experimental paradigm was employed to measure listening effort during speech understanding in younger and older adults were reviewed. A summary of the main findings reported in the articles is provided with respect to the participants’ age-group and hearing status. Effects of different signal characteristics, such as the test modality, on dual-task outcomes are evaluated, and associations with cognitive abilities and self-report measures of listening effor… Show more

“…The interested reader is referred to the discussion by Ahissar, Laiwand, and Hochstein (2001) and Handy (2000). Nevertheless, dual-task methods have proven quite successful in identifying a role for effort in listening behavior, for example, related to hearing aid setting preferences (see Gagne et al, 2017 for review).…”

“…In general, further investigations are warranted into the relationship between speech comprehension scores and listening effort, perhaps incorporating objective measures of listening effort (e.g. Ayasse et al, 2017; Gagné et al, 2017). …”

“…Nevertheless, the explicit instruction to read the words, activates verbal working memory which is the same cognitive function that speech-in-noise tests rely on. In view of this, our test is likely to be more sensitive to changes in listening effort than other visual tasks used in dual-task paradigms (Picou & Ricketts, 2014;Gagné et al, 2017).…”

“…Accordingly, the performance on this secondary task represents the effort expended on the primary task. Although dual-task paradigms are widely used, no consensus is yet achieved about which type of dual-task should be used (Gagné et al, 2017).…”
