Behavioral and Neural Signatures of Working Memory in Childhood

Abstract: Working memory function changes across development and varies across individuals. The patterns of behavior and brain function that track individual differences in working memory during human development, however, are not well understood. Here, we establish associations between working memory, other cognitive abilities, and functional MRI (fMRI) activation in data from over 11,500 9-to 10-year-old children (both sexes) enrolled in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, an ongoing longitudinal … Show more

“…The largest available population study including these variables is the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study (https://abcdstudy.org). At its current stage, ABCD provides a conclusive analysis on mostly prepubertal 10-year-old children demonstrating that processing speed and working memory are not related at this age 17 . Our results corroborate this finding revealing the difference in the maturational timing of the two behavioural measures, and also support an interpretation emphasizing their diverse neural background.…”

“…Literature reveals robust relationships between working memory, short-term memory, language skills, and fluid intelligence which are the basis for academic performance. [ 11 ] It is also seen that the relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness and academic achievement is mediated by executive functions such as working memory in school children. [ 12 ]…”

“…We used the average contrast values across two runs. As for behavioral performance for the N-back task, we used the accuracy of the 2-back condition as it is correlated well with performance of cognitive tasks collected outside of the scanner 38 .…”
